Unexpected benefit of in screen finger print sensor
While I prefer the rear mounted sensor for unlocking the phone, one of the things that has quickly dawned on me is that the under screen sensor is better for biometric unlocks for apps once the phone is unlocked. And these days a lot of my apps support biometrics. As a consequence, this may mean that I prefer this approach over the rear mounted sensor overall.
An unfortunate side effect is that it may also mean that face unlock is better overall. I don't have that feature on my Pixel 6 Pro. But, I am surprised that people focus on the experience unlocking the phone when talking about the various biometric options.
I mean, to me, it is OBVIOUS that the rear mounted option wins out for unlocking the phone in general. You can unlock will the phone is still in the pocket or while you are picking it up. Even a slow sensor, in many scenarios, provides a faster experience than any other option.
BUT, when you start adding app unlocks into the mix, the experience is completely different. Now, having the sensor under the screen, means I don't need to readjust my hand. I just launched the app with my thumb or finger so I'm ready to touch the screen again. And, if it were face unlock, it would be even better. You know, masks aside.
If you don't use biometrics with any of your apps, then I can see how opinions may change. But, I have quite a few apps which do use them for locks. So, for me this is quite a big deal.
