Is Erin O'Toole Canada's Trump?
Yes and no.
I think to many voters, on a wide range of important topics he has crossed enough boxes to warrant the comparison. I think it would be ignorant and unfair to assume that the outcome of O'Toole as Prime Minister would the same as Trump's. But, on many issues he and his party have been eerily in alignment with American policies over the past 4 years.
O'Toole's stance on vaccinating prisoners sounds very much like something Trump might say. His (insane) ramblings on the residential school crisis paint him quite far to the right. His party has long had stances on environmental progress and immigration which might be fine, even if they are in alignment with the US if they weren't also drastically at odds with what a majority of Canadian's expect.
I don't know what O'Toole's thoughts on these topics are. Like his predecessor, he is VERY willing to attack the current administration. But, very tight lipped on how he might do things differently on certain topics which are polarizing between the Conservative base and the rest of Canada.
However, I don't feel he is as inept or unfit for office. And, the office of PM is a less imposing office to hold. That being said, generations of Canadian politics have made great strides in reforming the powers of the PM. MPs almost always toe the party line and the PM controls that line. As such, in a majority government position the PM has arguably even more power than the US President.
Yes, I also think that whenever the next election cycle hits we will be bombarded by comparisons. Though, I find it hard to believe that this will be substantively different than the depths the Conservatives will take in attacking the Liberals. And no, I'm not justifying it.
Personally, I think political ads should be banned from attack ads. I've always felt it was the most flaccid form of advertisement to claim people should vote for you NOT because you're any good, but because you're trying to convince them that the other guy is worse.
If there is an election soon it should be interesting though. Jason Kenney has basically cratered Conservative support in Alberta by doing exactly what he promised. And Alberta was the only reason that the Federal Conservatives even came close in the last election. So, O'Toole is burdened with a need to diversify despite hailing from a party which seemed mortally afraid of angering their traditional base.
