Alberta's approach is NOT the right one.
Claims that the Premiere of Alberta is "balancing" priorities are complete and utter nonsense.
Viruses do not negotiate or compromise. They do not respect your attempts to "balance" things. If you're not putting in place the measures which will stop the virus from pushing you into an even greater lock down, then you WILL be pushed into an even greater lock down.
Read that again. I am saying NOTHING controversial, and nothing which can be argued. There is no hearsay. No reliance on any particular study or way of thinking. It is a statement based purely in unassailable fact.
If cases CAN push rates to a level where stricter lock downs are required and currently restrictions are NOT enough to stop it. It will happen.
Now, truthfully, this is only beyond debate because I haven't stated which measures are required. And that would be a lot more debatable.
But, what I can say is that Alberta as (unfortunately) followed EXACTLY the path I predicted based on the measures they had taken. And, we have seen in Toronto and many places around the world what measures are likely to be inadequate. And, put simply, the measures Alberta has taken... are likely to be inadequate.
So, what is the Premiere "balancing" then? It seems rather certain stricter requirements will be required. And when that decision is ultimately made, it won't have spared this round of lock down measures. Nor will it spare the added ones later. And the ones later may need to be longer and stricter as a result. BUT, even if we just assume that whatever measures they implement later will be identical to what they could have implemented previously in terms of severity and length the overall slate of measures and duration is still longer.
In short, implementing some measures simply to delay implementing stricter measures is NOT a balance of any sort. It simply results is more restrictions over a longer period which is OBVIOUSLY worse on the economy than accepting reality and just imposing stricter restrictions up front.
You can bitch and moan about freedoms and liberties and the economy all you want. The simple fact remains; people aren't doing enough on their own. Hospitals will be overwhelmed. And government will be pressured to lock down further. So, the best thing for everyone is to do it right from the start and then plan for the possibility of additional waves.
