Scheer... just shut up!
To clear the air, before I dive into this Scheer nonsense, I in no way condone the Prime Minister's trip to the cottage either. It is irrelevant that I feel it is less risky from a spread perspective. While he isn't doing anything he has specifically advised against, he is certainly doing things which the Premieres and health officials at all levels have cautioned against. And whether the risks are the same or not, he is a public official and should be providing a guideline which exceeds the advice of professionals.
Trudeau should be staying put in Ottawa, with his family. Now that his quarantine is over, if he has business in parliament which can't be conducted remotely, he should be allowed to leave for that. And nothing else.
Scheer? I really have 2 overarching problems with this story:
Once, my employer paid for a part of a ticket when I was away for a month. But, we both knew it was a privilege, and had something like this been going on at the time, we wouldn't have done it.
Let's cut through the shit. His family is doing the EXACT SAME THING that the Trudeau's are doing and which is making everyone furious. Only, they were also sharing a plane with others they aren't living in isolation with. And their suggested alternative was "to do it anyway, but on a commercial flight"?
Scheer is effectively the second largest public figure in Canadian politics behind Trudeau. His obligations are no less than the Prime Minister's. In fact, if you want the guy to hold the PM accountable, then Scheer's actions should actually be more beyond reproach than the PMs. And in this case he has done the opposite.
And, not only did Scheer and his family put our government's policy makers at heightened risk, while effectively threatening to put society at greater risk if they weren't permitted to fly, he also felt that THIS was the opt time to take a subtle jab at the PM.
"Speaking moistly" is probably the most hilarious phrase to come out of this thus far. But, the time not to use it is when you're trying to justify your bad decisions.
The other MPs on the plane were basically forced into compliance. Scheer's mention that they would have gone through the airports instead ties their hands. They are public figures, and they were presented with the option to either take on a small risk themselves, or subject a much larger number of people to that risk.
Trudeau's decision was wrong and reprehensible. But, he didn't do so in such a way which forced others outside his household into close confinement for hours or threaten to send his family gallivanting through public airports increasing the risk to others if his demands weren't meant. He also didn't then turn around and mock his opponent as a part of his defence of his actions.
Scheer's actions were effectively a mini-terrorist attack or a hostage situation. And no, I don't feel that is an exaggeration. His family did NOT need to travel. They should NOT have travelled with him. And he should NOT have used their potential travel through airports as a bargaining chip.

- That his family came with him at all.
- The "speaking moistly" comment.
