Language Journal: February 28th 2020
About a month left of new Anki.
I had debated stopping with Anki early, but the load should drop quickly once the influx of new cards dies down. And I'm already planning "life after new Anki cards".
I won't be continuing Anki indefinitely. But, before I can quit, I need proven methods to fill the void, and fill it more effectively. And I may never quit it completely. It does have its uses after all. Like reinforcing words I don't see enough because I'm not living in a place where I can be immersed in Japanese. But, definitely planning to delete my larger decks and scale back frequency.
Those plans are probably 3-6 months away. I want to be pretty comfortable with where I stand with the current decks first.
What does life look like after that? Well, I added Japanese as a language to the Google news app. Before I was only reading an article if it interested me. The last few days I've been trying to force myself to read an article or two a day whether or not I have any interest in the content. Needless to say I've been getting my fill of COVID-19 related news.
News is useful because it is often written a little more formally than something like a Manga or Anime. And I need exposure to more formal Japanese. Not because I need the learning of reinforced. But rather because I need to be thinking that way more often.
But, news is not enough either. Especially not written news. I'll probably find some Japanese YouTube channels or podcasts to follow and also try to get some news with audio/video as well.
From a personal goals perspective, I need to be at a point by the end of my Japan trip (say, a year to a year and a half away) that I can consume Japanese in quick, dense, enjoyable formats daily so I can spend my active learning time on my next language. Which will probably be French.
I'll still need to use the language if I don't want to lose it. And I don't want to lose it. Nor will I want to lose French. Ideally I see myself long term as trilingual (English/Japanese/French). I'll probably pick up some languages after French, but more as a way to learn enough to see less tourist packed places while travelling. And those languages I will be more willing to let lapse.
It is still a little crazy to think that I'm over half way to end point of this insane journey though.
