Niro PHEV Week #2

We're winding down on week two of owning this thing. And it has impacted me in strange ways.

The fuel economy is magical. Right now, we're at an average of 0.9L/100km. I've set the car up to only charge during off peak hours. Which in turn means that the 400+km of driving we've done over this period has probably cost us... $6. And, I think I'm being a bit pessimistic in that estimate.

$6 wouldn't have taken us 60km before. And yes, that is taking cost of electricity into account.

The drive is different, and a bit fun. It is fun to drive in eco mode. But, it is also fun to drive in sport mode. The fuel cost is turning me into a strange person. Knowing that the cost of driving is virtual inconsequential, I want to drive more. But, the only reasons I can come up with to do so, involve spending money. Which kind of defeats the purpose. Eventually, this will probably fade into normalcy. But, right now, I'm just itching to drive it.

I've had similar feelings about gas vehicles. But, they never lasted more than a day or two.

But, I also find myself looking out for other vehicles with the green plates. And I see almost none. There are virtually no chargers in my area. And the places where the density is greater still seems like it isn't nearly enough.

I have to repeat something I was spouting off in another post; governments are wasting tax money by focusing on BEVs. Hybrids and even PHEVs are much more broadly available in terms of quantity an price. Automakers make more money on them, they still fund the kind of battery tech that will help bring down the cost of EVs and if the incentives were there might actually lead to a noticeable environmental shift.

I hope that, in spite of poorly aimed government policies, that these segments take off.
