Backing out of Box of Manga is turning into a mixed bag of results for me.
Granted, I'm not really far enough along to complain. I literally just got the last box like 2 days ago.
But, I'm getting cold feet a bit I guess. I haven't resubscribed. And I may not. So first off, in the last box; got another duplicate! They still haven't sorted out their problems it seems. Which is a shame, because I really do love the concept. And it kind of drives home that cancelling may be the right choice. If I emailed them I KNOW they would send me new volumes in a heartbeat.
But, I shouldn't have to send an email with every other box I receive. It is just WAY too frequent.
On the other side of things though, I got a new manga from an anime I quite enjoyed and a volume from another new series from the author of 僕だけがいない街 which looks cool (but may not be up my alley).
I think that I can take something away from this experience though. And it will change my next purchase. My first purchase from CDJapan was an onslaught of manga from the same series. But, that just opens me up to even greater disappointment if things aren't exactly as expected. My next purchase will look a little more like a BoM box. I think I'll do 1 or 2 volumes of the Shield Hero light novel and maybe a volume from a manga or two I don't have the complete set for yet, along with a volume from something else I've heard of before, and maybe something random.
In short, if I can mix things up a bit more, I can kind of hedge my bets against any bad purchases. The primary goal of the switch was to get more Japanese resources, quicker and more affordably. Now I just need a bookshelf or 50 to hold all of this.
As for how the battle goes in general. Depends on the front you're looking at. Flashcards? Amazing! Reading? Good. Listening? Bad, but improving.
I'm starting to look into other venues for improving my skills. My old University has some Japanese classes, but they can't be audited. Was thinking it might be worth taking a look into how much it would cost to take a course, or even to see what it would take get a minor in Japanese added to my degree.
A lot of the communities in the area seemed to have disintegrated in the past few years. Some days it sucks being an introvert. Or else I might start my own community.
