Language Journal: July 11 2019 - Shipped
So my first order from cdjapan has shipped!
It is being shipped by SAL as that was the cheapest way to ship, and is incidentally the same shipping method BoM uses. So, it gives me a better idea on realistic timelines. It'll take 3 weeks more or less. And that is a pretty perfect timeline. It should show up about a week to two after my last BoM shipment.
What I've already learned from this endeavour is that it isn't as scary to go shopping on my own for manga. There are a few drawbacks. This time it took just over a week for the order to actually ship due to back ordered stock. If I continue to use SAL, this will mean that I really do need to be keeping on top of ordering regularly as some shipments may take as long as the BoM orders which get stuck in customs, which says nothing of the possibility of these orders becoming stuck in customs themselves.
This is partially offset by the fact that I buy more at a time. It could also be offset by using alternate shipping methods. SAL airmail isn't super expensive and cuts the shipping time down drastically. But it is still more expensive.
I think I will reserve that for cases where I make smaller shipments and need a quicker turnaround.
There are also tracked options which I could use with more expensive purchases, like games or DVDs. I'm actually getting quite excited about the prospects of upping my Japanese learning game.
I'm watching a lot more anime lately without subs. It is challenging. But, it is really exposing just how much I rely on the sub-titles. At this point, I'm mostly just hoping to have it help cement what I already know rather than actually expand my vocab much.
KonoSuba and Kimestu no Yaiba are the two I'm watching at the moment. They are both fairly ambitious. One is an Isekai, and the other is a fantasy, so fairly similar. Slice of life shows might be better for teaching me, but I was in the mood to watch these ones. And they train in a different, but important way. They train me to pick up what I DO in amongst a ton of stuff I don't know. Grasping for every little bit I can to enhance the context of what I'm seeing.
So, while Isekai and fantasy anime may not be real world examples. The challenge they present me is a real world one. I need to practice catching and understanding in real time the words that I already know.
