Language Journal: February 27th 2019

Watched all of Your Name in Japanese with no sub titles today. I would be lying if I said I followed it 100%. But, I really did follow pretty much everything, and understand, well, a lot of it.

I noticed something over the past few days. I really am able to detect the words pretty much all of the time now. I don't necessarily know what all of them mean and I can't always remember the right ones in the moment. But, I'm definitely at that point where I'm following the structure of Japanese sentences. If that makes sense. And it isn't just some of the time. It is pretty much ALL of the time now. I'm sure real world Japanese or examples of fast talking people in anime would still throw me off.

So, I'm trying to decide HOW to level up from here.

I *think* I'm ready to start writing in Japanese more regularly and with more structure. As well as exposing myself to increasing volume of native language materials.

When I first started with Box Of Manga, I was only getting through each month ahead of the next shipment by reading a little bit each night. Consuming those little amounts took a lot of time, and really required me to actually be reading almost every single day. This past month though, was markedly different. I finished 2 books in about 5 days. I would read about a quarter of a book in a sitting. I wouldn't say I'm equally invested, but the level of immersion coming from the amount I'm consuming feels like I'm accomplishing more and getting further.

Of course, this actually makes a bit of sense in context. I do still look up any word/phrase I'm not at least partially sure of. And I look up every word I'm even a little unsure of if it keeps popping up. In short, I'm not investing a lot of time on less common words and phrases and I'm still spending a decent chunk of effort on really common words and phrases which in turn speeds up everything afterwards.

I'm also working on my listening via things CrunchyRoll by turning off the subtitles in the browser and things like watching my movies in just Japanese. Again, no subtitles. Though, I'm perfectly willing to use Japanese subtitles with Japanese audio, I just don't have many sources like that.

And that brings me back to writing. I'm going to give myself a deadline. April 1st. Starting April 1st, I'm going to write an entry once a week purely in Japanese. It will probably start as simple descriptions of what went on in the week, etc...

Since I went back to Linux on my desktop I have setup it up with Japanese IME yet. Hence why a lot of my articles have contained no Japanese text lately. I need to sort that out before then.

For reading, I'm just going to stick with trying to keep up with BoM on a monthly basis. And for listening, I think I'm going to aim for watching a movie in Japanese or at least 3 episodes of anime a week without subs.

I'll still be doing my flashcards. So, I'm hoping I can both keep up with this plan and not burn out. I'll likely drop things before I burn out. I'm in an optimistic mood right now and it is hard to restrain myself from having grand plans.
