Language Journal: January 30th 2019

It is encouraging to see the things I predicted about my learning coming to pass.

Specifically, right now, my enthusiasm is growing little by little again.

The forecast reviews are rising again. From a low of the mid 120s up to 180 for tomorrow. And yet, I'm back to completing everything from reviews to new cards.

I can't say I'm AS into it as I have been. But, today, at the end of my reviews, for the last 20 or so, I was REALLY feeling immersed in things.

My manga collection has been kind of dissuading me. The stupid cuttlefish invasion book remains unfinished. And I never even got into the volume 3 of Erased before the next box arrived yesterday. And now I have up to volume 5 of Erased. But, I also got the next two volumes of Silver Spoon, and I'm quite stoked about those.

The only problem is that ALL of those are VERY complex books. They have furigana for everything. But they are memory testing books to be sure as both are LOADED with context specific terms.

I think what I need to do is put the cuttlefish book down for now. Move onto Erased and reward myself with Silver Spoon at the end. The cuttlefish can wait. Right now, I have 5 volumes of manga I actually like which I haven't even opened. I would have liked it if they were a little more spaced out with some slightly lighter content. But, that is the laziness in my speaking. I need to lay down a time to read manga. Or at the least a time for my side projects.

And now a brief intermission to talk about the things which drew me away from Japanese for a bit. I know I called this a language journal, but since the other things are eating into that time, it worth talking about them here as well.

So yeah, I'm hoping I didn't kill my seeds for my hydroponics. Apparently tomatoes and peppers like hotter weather. But, my heating solution hasn't been the greatest. Today I improved things and made a little tent like structure with just enough ventilation for the heater exhaust and jacked up the heat a bit. The whole process reminded me of the fermentation chamber I made and promptly abandoned (and no longer need). I just need to figure out where to put it, and things will be golden. I'll need another thermostat driven outlet when I get back into beer making.

I've also built my passive feeding system's container. It hold 6 cups at the moment. I could have fit more, but I'm already a little concerned that 6 is too many to maintain the water and nutrient levels. It is definitely more water than 6 mason jars for the Kratky method. And, I guess I can always feed in more nutrient solution via top feeding. I just don't want it to become a daily maintenance project. I need something I can set and forgot for at least 1-2 weeks. But, we'll see. This is, after all just a pilot project. So, if it is too labor intensive, then v2 will be bigger.

The other thing taking my time is my Home Assistant server. Plex is more or less sorted out. My problems were with the client on the TV. It wouldn't play many of the movies on the server, but restarting the TV fixed it. Definitely explains why it worked elsewhere. Just does explain why some movies worked and others didn't.

I turned off MQTT and Node-Red and uncommented the related sections of my config. I don't have anything using them at the moment.

The SQL environment seems stable which is nice.

I have Steam running and even, in theory some Windows games running on Linux in there via Proton. As a result I'm missing my Windows partition less and less. I haven't tried them all, but some launched from my Windows installations without a hitch so good signs.

A quick test with the Pi and SteamLink failed. I'm wondering if Plex is interfering there, as I gave it access to the video hardware. Or, it could have been a random glitch. I just don't know. I'm a little disappointed, I had been hoping to convert the Pi into a dual purpose games and media streamer, but since everything seemed super beta-y I went straight to just installing it directly on a fresh Raspbian install. Worth another check later.

Tried out PiHole and PiVpn. PiHole was cool, but I decided to turn it off after I remember that some sites detect this and it may adversely impact our renter. So, maybe when he is moved out I'll put it back in. PiVpn within Docker failed me. But, I think I DO want a VPN, so I may try again as a standalone install rather than trying it via a 3rd party Docker install. But, that largely depends on how much it taxes the Pi, otherwise I'd just load it onto the server.

Lastly, adding tensorflow support into Home Assistant. Find the right combination of settings is a PITA. Bit the bullet and added a year of Nest Aware to my account. Gets me more frequent images. And, doing the detection on my own is already proving WAY more reliable than Nest's own service. It blows me away that I'm using Google's own tool, TensorFlow, to analyze images using freely available models with a single pre-defined zone and the results are better detection than what Nest provides. But, it is taking a bit of time to get the whole thing where I want it.

Last thing I tried was making the processing work off of the Nest's motion detection sensor. And yet, I'm sitting there looking at the stills retrieved by HA and my wife is smack in the middle of the detection area and it is giving me nothing. Pretty darn infuriating. But, I've seen it work under other settings. So, it seems like it is just a matter of finding that sweet spot.
