Language Journal: October 1st 2018
I don't even know where to start really.
I wanted to write today, but as I start, nothing is coming.
It is the first of October. We're running quickly up to the 2 year anniversary of my journey into Japanese. I don't think I'm at a place where I can really afford to slow down without impacting my retention. But, I feel like I'm making great strides in the last few weeks. I got through the second volume of Orange in 3 sittings over the span of about 3 days. I'm not even a week in since the last shipment and I'm over half done the third volume as well.
Combine this all with the fact that it was delivered more or less on time and, (fingers crossed) I'll hopefully be done all 4 books in time to give some of them a decent re-reading with a stronger emphasis on building flashcards.
There are a number of unknowns though. Firstly, Orange IS still the easiest series I've encountered. And that is true on multiple fronts. From content to situations, etc... The second volume wasn't like starting a new series where the first pages were filled with new terms because it is the continuation of a fairly simple story.
Having said that though, there are also clear pluses. Namely, I got through the second volume and as far as I am in the third volume at a similar pace to my second read through the first volume. What this means is, the ease I had re-reading the first volume wasn't purely because I had seen all of the sentences before. Because, these new volumes are new sentences. Even if it is similar and simpler than a lot of other stuff. It is still absolutely worth noting that these were totally new sentences and I was assimilating them much more quickly.
I'd also say my comprehension is on par with, if not higher than my second read through of volume 1. I feel like it is higher. Though, I blame that feeling on motivation more than content. Orange isn't exactly a riveting read to go through multiple times. Even though Orange isn't the sort of thing I'd normally read if I weren't learning a language, at least the second and third volumes are books I haven't read yet and so each sentence is a little more compelling to dissect.
I'm actually quite interested to see how ちぇみ三兄弟、日常 and 僕だけがいない街 fare on a second reading. Erased has the most compelling story and I'm interested to see if it can entice for me a second read through. The other 2 are both comedies, at least on some level. I'm sure I missed a TON of humor. I think those will actually be the easiest to re-read. ちぇみ三兄弟 is a little less compelling than 日常 since the content is even further from being my thing than Orange, but I might be able to get back through it by looking for the jokes. I'm most motivated to make flashcards for amusing content.
Anyway, I easily turned that from nothing into a decent length post. Before I rant too long I'll actually finish my flashcards for the day.
