The Pixel 3XL leaks likely aren't fake
We won't TRULY know until everything is formally unveiled in a little more than a week. But, I think it is reasonably safe to say that the Pixel 3 leaks have all been legitimate.
I did comment that the number of leaks seemed surprisingly large. But after reading up a bit more, it became clear why.
I had known that Google had bought Motorola. And I had assumed that they were the team involved in the Pixel 3. Just shows how much I keep informed on these things. As this is apparently not the case.
This explains things in a number of ways. Firstly, because they have two teams working in parallel, the general assumption is that Google is going to axe one of them. And right now, all signs point to Google execs planning to get rid of the current Pixel team and replace it with the Motorola resources. They've increased targets for sales without any reason to believe sales will actually be higher than with the Pixel 2 and so on and so forth.
So, members of the Pixel team are likely frustrated and may be leaking as a means of rebellion.
Members of the Motorola team may be leaking as a retaliatory move to protect their own interests.
And thirdly, apparently security has ramped up, but not around the Pixel teams hardware. Motorola engineers are the focus of Google's attempts to protect their IP. Which has made it easier for mistakes to happen around the current Pixel hardware, making it easier for non-Google employees to leak stuff.
With all of this information in hand... the volume of the leaks doesn't actually seem to be that bad.
It also deals a bit of a death blow to the Pixel Ultra. At least, I don't expect such a device on October 9th. Some have argued about the existence of 3 code names for the upcoming pixels. But, this ignores the fact that there were also 3 code names for the Pixel 2, and only 2 devices materialized then.
You may also be tempted to see the Motorola device as the Pixel Ultra. But, regardless of what it is actually called in the long run, I think it would be incorrect to think that this third code nameds device has anything to do with what the Motorola team is working on. From the sounds of it, the rest of the Pixel team has been kept in the dark about what they're working on as well. And it doesn't really line up with the timing either.
More than likely, there were 3 code names because there were 3 devices in an earlier stage and one was abandoned in favor of another. In other words, it was probably just an early prototype.
Given a number of the rumors and descriptions of how things are working around the Motorola team though, I wouldn't be surprised to see another phone in less than 6 months. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
