Seriously? You want to take the John A MacDonald statue?
OK. So Victoria BC takes down a statue of John A Macdonald to appease Native Canadian's upset over his involvement in the school system which caused so many issues.
I personally don't care one way or another. Statues aren't history. And, they only "stand for" whatever it is people see them as standing for. So, I'm not sure I really get why it needed to come down in the first place. But, maybe a lot of people were flocking to the statue and thinking "hmm, maybe we should torment our native people's some more". Or perhaps a number of native Canadian's were legitimately offended by it. I don't really want to play it down.
I tend to feel like every statue out there offends SOMEONE. Or even offends a decent sized group of individuals. I mean, every statue of a person is a statue of someone with flaws who has done somethings wrong. In many cases however, they are also people who have done good or even great things. What matters is how they are primarily remembered.
But... whatever. It is done.
UNTIL DOUG FORD. "Hey! You know that statue that offended a whole group of people that you just took down? Yeah that. We'll take it and find a home for it here!"
Whatever the statue stood for. It has been removed for a very specific reason. And THAT is what it now stands for. Not to mention, as others have pointed out, we already have a statue of MacDonald at Queen's Park. There is literally no reason at all to take the statue. Unless you're stupid or intentionally trying to piss people off.
That specific statue of one of our countries founders pretty much exists now, only to embody his involvement in one of the darker times in our history. It is known now for it's specific relationship to that chapter in our story. It has been torn down because that relationship was acknowledged. Whatever else it may have stood for, it is totally tainted.
Asking to save that statue is a giant middle finger to all those offended. And to everyone else involved as well.
The worst part is, I can only hope that this is some ploy to draw attention away from something else. Because it is just too bonkers and evil if it isn't.
