Well, I said that there would be a lot more of these. And true to that, here is another one.
I've made some changes to my plans and expectations. By relaxing my restrictions on what I convert into a flashcard it seems I'm able to rather rapidly increase my progress through Orange. And so, I think I'm going to roll with that.
As I said last time, I want to keep up with the pace I'm getting the manga, but I also want to balance my other priorities in life. Having a process where it takes 30 minutes to get through 5-10 pages isn't going to get me there. I'm now almost half way through the book in 2 days. This is much more realistic.
The more I thought on it, the more I stumbled across other benefits as well. The slower I go, the less exposure I get in terms of volume per day. I also effectively kill off any possibility that I will re-read these books. By only stopping to refresh myself on words I'm second guessing or words I know I have other flash cards for I'm able to get much more in. It is also helping to keep the things I'm reading in context. Stopping to make a flashcard really takes me out of the reading process and makes the learning feel much more sterile.
I'm hoping, with this approach, that I can easily finish a book in LESS than a week on average. And then re-read them as a means of testing and reinforcing what I learned. Considering how much I got through yesterday this doesn't seem unlikely. I easily read 1/3 of the book yesterday. If I'm aiming for 3-4 days a week of reading, and the pace is sustainable, then it should be in the bag. So, even on weeks where I just read 4 times, I could be getting back into the book a second time. And weeks where I'm more motivated, I might get through 2 full readings.
It dawns on me though, that all of this also sounds like a way of slacking off and losing progress. So, let's add in some accountability. On those 3-4 days when I read, what am I expecting of myself? I'm going to up the card minimum to 10, and the page minimum to 50. I still want a lower goal on cards in case I hit challenging material. If I crack open the next manga and every second word is new, 50 pages will be impossible to tackle at my casual pace. But, with the relaxed standards on what I'm making cards for, when there isn't a ton of new vocab or grammar, I should be easily able to handle 50 pages.
So, while it sounds like I've increased my burden, I don't think I really have. I'm being far more lax on what I spend the time to convert into a flashcard, and I'm also admittedly, going easier on the amount of research. Instead I'm adding contextual notes to the cards and hoping that the material itself will help cement the more nuanced meaning. So, while I doubled my daily card expectations, I can input them quicker as well. And while I've really cranked up the number of pages, with the relaxed restrictions I'm getting through them much more quickly and having more fun doing so.
That is the end for now.
