These posts might become frequent for the next while. Writing about, I think, is helping a bit to keep me motivated. It is also providing a good outlet to being constructive in my thoughts.
Firstly, these books are larger than I originally thought. I'm, maybe 40 pages in, and I'm only like 15% done. Maybe less, unlikely more. So there are somewhere in the vicinity of 200 pages. Though, this looks like the biggest of the 4 books, it also isn't all that much bigger. And it is only about the middle of where I expect the others to fall in terms of complexity.
That being said... I'm kind of loving it. For now. There isn't a ton of text per page as they are basically comic books. If my comprehension doesn't go up in a few weeks or months though, I can see myself losing focus. Right now, it is looking like it may be hard to finish a book in a week, even though I could probably finish in an hour if it were English.
The difficulty level is pretty good. The generally idea is to try and find things with a good mix of words and grammar that I both know and don't know. I hit a stride where I did like 5 pages last night without having to stop. And every here and there I'll hit a full page like that.
But, when I stop it slows things down a lot. I'm trying to build good flash cards. So, I'm pulling in a lot of information. But, there are also cards where it takes more time to get the information. Sometimes it is linguistic nuances, these should die down over time. Others, it is VERY strange applications if you try and use the common English definitions of certain terms.
Another problem is time. I'm still fairly casual. It is actually QUITE doable to finish a book a week. If I spent a whole work day on it, I could easily crush half a book a day at my current pace. But, I have a family and job. And balancing those doesn't make studying Japanese impossible, but it does make it impossible to dedicate large chunks of time every day to it. Which is why I was HOPING originally to be able to finish a book in 3-4 half to one hour sessions a week.
I don't think my skill is anywhere near at that level. But, hopefully it can get there.
I definitely think I need to lower my expectations. 5 new Anki cards a day or 5 pages. My general MO is to set the bar low and then exceed it. I totally expect to do way more than 5 pages a day. But, if I can set that as the lowest point, I think I'll be able to keep at it fairly easily. Already up to 3 new cards today that I added over lunch. But, to keep at a reasonable pace with this subscription service, for the moment, I'm going to need to try to do that every day, as opposed to 3-4 times a week.
残念ですがそれは現実そうだね
