No Virtual Console for the Switch
Well, this is a bit of a bummer.
Personally, I don't know what I'm missing out on. I had a Wii, but either stopped using it, or got rid of it entirely before this was added and hadn't owned any of the other Nintendo consoles which supported it.
To me this feels like the way Sony is treating it's consumers with the PS4. The Switch is succeeding, so, rather than rewarding the customers that brought them back from the brink, they are milking them.
Between Xbox One and PS4 I chose the Xbox One and don't regret it for a second. Microsoft, perhaps because they were the underdog, has been investing HEAVILY in delivering on the things people are asking for an even services which people weren't asking for, but which iterate and improve on subscriptions in the form of Game Pass. The OS has been improved and enhanced so many times it is border line infuriating just how hard they trying.
PS4 and Switch? Patch and update only when needed.
Both Sony and Nintendo were in similar places when their most recent consoles launched. Both were coming off failures or at least relative failures and their finances were straining, but breakthrough products rocketed them back to the top.
By all accounts, market experts were predicting that the gaming market was smaller than it ended up being and these companies both exceeded by wide margin their expected sales.
Bottom line. Xbox is putting in the most effort when they're the least able to afford it. By contrast, Sony and Nintendo are smashing sales records and giving the customers nothing back.
This is a bit of a scathing review. But, I stand by these sentiments. Nintendo isn't just shooting down Virtual console for Switch, they aren't even offering an avenue forward for those who had it in the past. Some games might get offered with the online service and some might be sold separately. Initial offerings on the Online service seem limited to classic NES games. Which, while cool for nostalgia sake, doesn't exactly appeal to real gamers and doesn't come close by miles to replacing Virtual Console.
I think what makes it most pertinent however is the fact that Wii will lose Virtual Console. I don't pretend to know the reasons. But, if there are valid reasons, like cost or licensing, it would be much easier to just say this. Without any rationale, it is natural (I think) to assume this is a move to drive up profits further.
