NOW Ikea supports Google Home?

Literally less than a week ago I configure openHab2 on my Linux laptop, connected it to the cloud and wired it up to Google Home so I could use assistant to control my Tradfri lights.

The only bright light in this series of events is that I hadn't impulse purchased a Raspberry Pi to move openHab2 onto a lower powered device.

openHab is great by the way. And it connected with the cloud connector it does more than Google Home integration enables. But, basic Google Home integration is really all I care about. So, it is a bit frustrating that after months and months of Ikea missing their targets for delivering this integration that it comes in the very same week I finally give up on them implementing something and go and setup a workaround.

Thankfully, detaching my openHab account and swapping the Tradfri stuff was fairly simple. The interface IKEA uses for this is incredibly weak not super intuitive. But, it isn't lengthy and worked immediately.

Overall, I'm happy enough.

Somewhere down the road I may still get a Pi and put openHab on. With the cloud connector stuff it does enable me to control the devices remotely as I can with the Hue bulbs. I also, at some point, want to put up a tablet or something somewhere in the house as a central control point for the smart home. And for that, openHab allows me to combine both my Hue and Tradfri bulbs in a single interface along with the Nest stuff.

Anyway, this is the best solution overall for me for now. It means I can go back to powering my laptop off and I don't even need to add another low power device to the network. So, win-win.
