Language Journal: January 2018
Well, the month is almost over. We're now well past the 1 year and 1 month point. I've still done my Anki cards every day from the day I started them. I imagine that is close to a year now.
I gave up on learning the readings from the Kanji flash cards. It is too hard to bolt that onto the existing Kanji knowledge. I found most days I was just ripping through them. And I don't really care all that much. In the pain vs. gain, the pain won out this time. I have changed the way I do things when reading though. I'm much more conscious of the Kanji and the sound they contribute. Especially when picking up new vocabulary and that is slowly, but surely helping.
The problem is needing more new sources of vocab. I'm at the 'good' level with everything in my current decks. I've started translating songs in an app of my own devising. And I use an app on my phone for translating the occasional NHK easy news stories.
I might try to upgrade from the core 2000 to maybe something like Core 4000 or whatever I can find. Or, I may try and get my app to output my lyric segments with their translations into an Anki deck. Or both. Also considering getting the Nihongo Shark Premium NDL's. I quit JapanesePod 101, so in theory I could divert that money elsewhere. I haven't quite decided yet.
BTW, by 'good' with my Anki decks, what I mean is I could probably do about 75% of the cards in my sleep now. Of the remaining, I'd probably get another 15% right with a bit of thought and the remaining 10% would be hit or miss based on the day. There might be a card here or there I wouldn't get.
Basically, while continuing with it is good. It is more just sustained reinforcement. I'm making sure I don't forget what I've learned and maybe making that weaker 25% of the cards a little stronger over time.
Anyway... that is all for now I guess.
