Will Ryzen reverse AMD's fortune?

I think I should turn this into a blog full or arbitrary predictions.

Saw an article speculating that AMD's new Ryzen chips could help shoot their stock value up.

I'm going to say, there may be a small, temporary boost no better than any company receives after launching a new product which reviews well. Ultimately though, a single chipset release by AMD though won't have either huge or prolonged impacts on their value.

The reasons here are simple. AMD is competing with two things. Contracts and brand image. OEM's are largely committed to Intel and generally only even consider AMD chips for lower end variants. It won't matter if the chips are better than Intel's or not. Until AMD can improve their image with consumers and contracts and business relationships with Intel change as a result, AMD won't gain a lot.

I don't want to make this sound like doom and gloom. A turn around has to start somewhere, and this may very well be that turning point for AMD. But, for it to do so, it will either need luck or a few more releases like this.

If Intel can counter this chip, any potential will fizzle out. And, being the current king, Intel has a number of ways to do this. Intel could probably devastate this lineup without any new tech by simply lowering prices on their current offerings.

If AMD can deliver a follow up however that repeats the success of Ryzen, I think people will start paying attention. And if they can do it again after that if will bode well.

In this market though, where you're delivering a component and not a finished good it takes a lot more time to pull off a 180.
