People are just stupid!

OK, so I was thinking today about one-handed mode on Windows 10 Mobile and I thought "hmm, it would be nice if you could control how far down the screen compressed, and while I'm at it, it might be nice if it could squeeze to the right or left a bit as well". After all, different phones have different sized screens, and different humans have different sized hands. To the ideal amount of screen compression will vary by both person and device.

So, to increase odds of my feedback being taken seriously, I decided to go and look for an existing piece of feedback to up vote. In the process I came across a number of "suggestions" that make me a little scared for the fate of my species.

I'll start with my favorite. One user basically filled three lines of comment calling Microsoft stupid and saying Apple would do thing differently, only to ultimately state that the space left at the top shouldn't JUST compress, it should add new functionality up there!?!?!?! Yes! Literally. And this WAS "properly" filed specifically under the one-handed mode section in the feedback app. So *presumably* we can expect that the person was aware of the fact that the functionality was there to make everything on the screen accessible with one hand. AND YET.... his justification for Microsoft being "stupid" is that they didn't decide to make everything currently on the screen accessible, just to make room for other things which would then be outside of your reach. Yep, Apple sure wouldn't be dumb enough to make the same "mistake".

I mean, he literally just argued that the feature would be made better by COMPLETELY defeating the ENTIRE purpose of the feature.

Don't get me wrong, I can see how it might seems like wasted space. And, if you have a smaller phone (or bigger hands) and don't actually need a one-handed mode, it might look like neat way to open up some additional functionality. Doesn't change the fact that you would be completely missing the point of the feature. Also, if they did this, people would immediately complain that the compressed UI was too small to use accurately because they'd keep trying to use it 2 handed on their sub 5 inch phones.

Another suggestion was split screen apps. Again... totally defeats the purpose of the feature.

Yet another suggestion was to not leave the space black. Aesthetically, I can see the interest. And, this I imagine is something Apple WOULD actually do specifically for that reason. But, I agree with the black box. The big empty black box implied to me that clicking on it would restore the UI to full screen. If the whole screen hadn't compressed, I might have felt that another long press of the Windows button was the only way to get it to revert back. In other words... it actually serves as a visual cue that way.
