10166 on Mobile...
So, I had said that I would blog more if there was anything of note about the recent build and it turns out there is!
First things first, some people have reported issues getting this build on their phone. Do some searches if you're thinking about taking the dive just to make sure a decent chunk of people on the same device has succeeded with ease in getting the latest update. I'm working with Rogers Lumia 1020 running on Telus here in Canada.
And the reason for the blog is, the build is actually much more stable and performant than the prior builds I tried. It is by no means perfect. But the last build I tried was so bad I had to roll back to 8.1. Performance on this device is night and day from the last build I tried (believe 2 builds ago). Stability is much better as well.
Performance is probably what most people notice right away. EVERYTHING was painfully slow before. Now, almost everything is snappy. Also, gone are weird flashing animations on start screen. Among the few holdouts, the notification center doesn't seem to want to show many times and it can be a little on the slow side. Definitely not something to lose sleep over.
Stability is also much improved just about everywhere. Outlook Mail likes to crash on me and I'm sure I've had another app or two crash once. But before, it felt like everything would crash regularly. Including settings screens. It was bad.
I've had just one incidence of the phone heating up and discharging quickly (some background task running indefinitely due a bug most likely). And even that it wasn't as hot as before and didn't kill the battery as fast. Actually, just happened on my way home from the cottage and I probably still would have made it to the end of the day. But I need my alarm in the morning so I power cycled and threw it on the charger early.
If you're wanting to get on board and people aren't largely complaining about your device and you don't mind some minor hiccups (and dealing with the changes in the OS), this is the build I think to get your feet wet with.
