YAY! We're still fighting over XboxOne vs PS4!
I'll be honest, I thought this would died off by now. Both consoles have been out for a goodly timespan now and I would think that people on both sides would have settled down and accepted the state of things. But, apparently that was hoping for too much.
The article is very slightly hilarious though. I don't own the Witcher 3, I also don't own a PS4 so I can literally verify none of this. But the argument appears to be that after the latest patch the game run smooth on the Xbox One but there are dips in frame rate on the PS4 which some are complaining about.
I've long made the argument that resolution is nowhere near as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be and funnily enough I think that the forum linked above makes the point for me. What I'm seeing is:
- People are complaining that the PS4 is dropping frames.
- NO ONE is complaining about the resolution on the Xbox One.
This of course has erupted into some saying it runs better on the Xbox One because the frame rate is more stable and some claiming it runs better on the PS4 because it has the higher resolution. Both miss the point. The quality of gameplay has nothing to do with specs and everything to do with experience.
This isn't a post to say which console is better. Many of the forum posters are right in saying that the PS4 is effectively doing more, even when it fails to maintain frame rate than the Xbox One owing to the higher resolution.
In this particular instance however, at the moment, it appears that the trade-offs made for the Xbox One have indeed resulted in this game "running better" on the Xbox One. The lack of complaints about issues tends to back an argument that the quality of the experience is better on the Xbox One.
Don't take that to mean that if you want the best experience possible you should buy an Xbox One or if you own both to buy it for this system. Firstly, there will undoubtedly be future patches which may (or may not) very well tilt to experience back in favour of the PS4 again. Also, you need to consider what is more important to you; stable frame rates or higher resolution?
I think the above attests to the fact that despite what they may say on forums, most people would actually prefer stable frame rates over a slightly better resolution.
