PlayStation + Multimedia Focus = Infuriating Hypocrisy
I'm not sure what is wrong with the universe. But perhaps Microsoft is falling into some sort of trap Sony laid out over a year ago.
Sony and its fans basically mocked the living hell out of Microsoft for advocating the Xbox One as a multimedia machine. Now, at E3 Sony is unveiling PlayStation TV? WTF????
Seriously, once again, Sony fans SHOULD be pissed off. But they don't appear to be. There are 2 reasons for this. This shows the company is also focused on multimedia. But furthermore... why is there a separate piece of hardware for this?
This functionality should be part of the PS4, the way the XB1 IS Microsoft multimedia device. Once again, Sony has managed to charge its customers more for less and no one seems to be the wiser. While at the same time be as hypocritical as humanly possible. Mind = Blown.
But here is the trap part of it. Well over a year ago, before the launch of either system, Sony managed to incense fans partly by pointing out that they focused on games first and that Microsoft was supposedly splitting its efforts between games and media. So, Sony managed to show up at an event and show off games and only games and have everyone walk away pleased.
Now, a year and a bit later. Microsoft, thinking they learned from the past, come to the stage with a message about games and only games and everyone is left disappointed somehow. But Sony, now leads with a message about games and multimedia and they are the darlings?
I'm baffled. Truly I am.
Last in my vast array of criticism. PlayStation Now. I knew it. I told you all so. And no one seems to care one iota. This is NOT FREE. THIS IS NOT A MEANS OF PLAYING YOUR OLD PS3 GAMES ON YOUR PS4. In other words this DOES NOT address backwards compatibility. Having to pay between $2.99 and $19.99 to pay a game on PlayStation now is nothing but a means of charging you a second time to play a game you already own (for the backwards compat. argument).
We also have yet to see how it will actually fare in terms of render lag and input lag.
But the other important factor. THIS MEANS DRM. Are people FUCKING out of their minds stupid? What was the single biggest thing people tore MS a new one over in their last E3 presentation? DRM in the Xbox One. It also means you need an always on internet connection. The second biggest complaint they got. You can't trade your games... you don't even own them yourself.
Everyone should be every shade of pissed off. This DRM is all the little things people bitched about from the original Xbox One unveil and then some. And this time, the fears are real. You cannot even play your game for one second without an internet connection. It is DRM protected. It isn't free. There WILL be lag (some degree of it is inherent in what they are offering). You cannot trade titles. You don't even own titles.
Don't get me wrong. I think PlayStation Now is a great idea. I also thought the original Xbox One as it was announced was a good idea too. What I'm trying to highlight here is that everything people did, and still continue to say were wrong about the original Xbox One plan are present in PlayStation Now. The hypocrisy comes from the complete lack of a backlash on something that should be, by the thinking that condemned the Xbox One, even more flawed.
Congrats to Sony. You have made the media and fans your mindless sheep.
