Surface 3
Well. Microsoft launched the Surface 3 today. So I figured that was noteworthy.
Honestly, I don't get the hype and I'm definitely in the Microsoft camp.
Lighter, faster, etc... just sounds like another iPad product launch. I was hoping they would unveil an expansion of the Surface line up. Hasn't really been long enough in my opinion to put out a new Surface Pro, so I was hoping for a more affordable Surface mini and/or a larger Surface.
I guess I partially got the latter half of that. Is it better than the last generation? Undoubtedly. But then, so too is every iteration of most every other product.
Don't get me wrong. I want one of these. I probably can't justify it any time soon. But I can't say that I want it substantively more than a discounted version of either the last generation or even the original. And that's the problem. If someone like me who actually wants a Surface tablet doesn't see some substantive difference/gain over prior models why would it sway those who aren't already in that camp?
And they basically gave them ammunition to shoot back at them. The aspect ratio, while probably great for the intended purposes is odd. Videos aren't meant to run natively in that resolution, neither were games and I imagine it may impact some web sites. Will be interesting to see reviews once people really get a chance to try it out. But the main point is... even if the odd duck resolution "just works" everywhere, and out of the box, anti-Microsoft people will jump on it just for being different. Those who haven't used it will create FUD articles proclaiming it a failure, and many will simply buy into it.
Also, like Kinect, the touch cover should just come with the tablet. If this is supposed to be the version that finally makes it possible for a tablet to replace both your existing tablets and laptops, then it NEEDS to have a physical keyboard. Heck, punch out a cheaper version if you need or increase the base price. Don't "hide" the true cost to deliver on your vision behind +1's that jack up the price.
Anyway, my next tablet purchase is probably still a year or more away. But unless Surface 4 or 5 or whatever number we are up to by then offers something special I'll looking for an older generation model to save on cost.
That out of the way I think the i3 model is cheaper than the base Surface Pro 2. So it may be a good fit for cost vs. Performance for some. And, if there aren't price drops or you can't find a discounted last gen one new, the i5 is the same price as last generation and there is no good reason to pass it up if you were already willing to invest that much, unless you find the 12 inch screen too big.
That's all I've got for now.
