Apparently FanBoy actually means ignorant fool.
So, this is some impressive idiocy.
Last week Microsoft announced that the next Xbox One update will enable external hard drives. Some users who have access to the beta tried out a few devices and noted that the external drives can actually significantly out-perform the internal drive.
Commenters on these posts have then turned around and started throwing some hate at Microsoft for "forcing people to fork out additional money to upgrade their system".
Firstly... the statement in and of itself is pure idiocy. Of course a company would expect you to pay money to upgrade stuff. Apple doesn't give away free iPad upgrades just because new hardware was released (and they don't even allow you to change the internals on mots of their products, and where they do, they need to be approved). Sony doesn't throw free HD upgrades at their console users. PC manufacturers don't do anything like that either.
But what blows my mind is, it isn't just one person saying this. I only read part of one stream of comments on one article and passed by 5 in as many minutes. Is stupidity contagious and achieving pandemic status?
There is absolutely NO merit to these statements.
But the statement itself isn't the dumbest thing to it. Where things get even more idiotic is the people mocking this are clearly not XB1 fans, so they are either PC fans or PS4 fans (or possibly in the case of extreme dementia, Apple users [the extreme dementia here, not referring to being an Apple fan in general, but rather the extreme irony in the fact that Apple provides the least upgradeability on all fronts, and such a fan mocking Microsoft here is basically pure hypocrisy]).
Guess what? A lot of PC's come equipped with equally shitty hard drives. And the OEM's will expect you to pay your own money to upgrade the drives. And the upgrade would cost you the same effectively as it would for an similar external drive for your Xbox One.
The PS4? Has the exact same shitty internal hard drive specs as the Xbox One!!! 500gb SATA 2 attached 5400 RPM drive. So guess what dumbasses? Sony gives you the exact same PoS and expects you to fork out your own money to upgrade their cheap ass hard drive as well. And the upgrade situation is actually WORSE (more on that later).
And do you think any of these companies really want you to feel this way? NONE of these companies are actively in the hard drive manufacturing field. There is a 0% chance of Microsoft, Sony, or most PC manufacturers making a cent off your forced upgrade path. In fact Apple is the only company that has ever profited from such a move by requiring to you to use only approved hardware and only honoring warranties if installed by an authorized reseller. So why assume any malice here towards Microsoft? And why ONLY towards Microsoft? It simply doesn't make sense.
At the end of the day, external storage is actually the superior option. The obvious reason is performance. Both the Xbox One and PS4 use SATA 2 connections which set a fairly low bottleneck. So on both systems there is a quick and easy performance cap you'd hit regardless of drive selection with internal drives. The other reason is total storage vs. price. If I can't attach an external, that means I need to replace the internal drive. If I need to replace the internal drive, than I need to pay more to reach the same total storage as I would on a system where external drives are supported. And that means it is also more expensive.
For instance... if I want 1TB total storage and a certain amount of performance. On the Xbox One I just need to buy a 500GB drive with the specs I want. With a PS4, I need to buy a 1TB drive instead and, even if the drive is capable of delivering the performance I want, the system is less likely to be able to use it to that level of performance. The price gap for an extra 500GB will easily cover the extra cost (if any) to get an external model or an enclosure. So, the PS4 route promises a more costly upgrade with poorer performance.
The ONLY benefit of the PS4 I can see is that the drive is internal. But even that imposes additional constraints, like you can only ever have 1 drive attached. In fact, some people with XB1 have external drive enclosures that support RAID arrays that are working with the Xbox One. So, they also support an array of drive recovery, additional potential performance gains and additional possibilities for drive storage.
Pull your heads out of your asses. You don't like this move by Microsoft because you don't like Microsoft, and you clearly have no good reason for not liking them, otherwise you might actually have a valid complaint against them or this console.
