Ok Sony. Are you really that dumb?
Apparently the new VR headset Sony is working on for the PS4 requires (or can utilize) the Move tech. So, not only would you need to fork out whatever ungodly price tag the idiotic headset would cost you, you also need to go out and buy a PS Move set as well to get the most of the new system.
Aren't you glad Sony didn't bundle the Move in the way Microsoft did with Kinect?
Lets be realistic. This headset apparently spanks the Oculus Rift, which costs how much? Too much is the simple answer. Sure, Sony has better connections and could probably both build and sell a superior unit cheaper. They could probably even afford to sell at a slight loss, if they could be assured of certain levels of success. So, lets say they rolled the dice and ate some of the cost, and seriously undercut the Rift. I think, absolutely best case scenario would be a $250 headset. Toss in Move and you're over $300. For an accessory.
And those are some damn bold assumptions. That price is super low for that sort of tech in today's market. And, Sony has no reason to believe such an accessory would be successful regardless of cost. And given the companies current financial situation they can't really afford to subsidize the sales.
All of this pushes the price back into the realm of being competitive pricewise with the Rift at around $350. Add a Move sensor and your accessory costs more than the console.
And there is even less reason to expect such an accessory to succeed. Lack of cross platform equivalence. By the time this hits the market, most games will be cross platform, because as the market for Xbox One and PS4 grow it becomes harder to justify releasing an exclusive title and sacrificing the sales. And cross platform devs tend not to invest much if anything on platform exclusive tech. Kinect and Move got off the ground because Wii paved the way. Wii got off the ground because the motion sensing remotes were the primary input method.
I truly believe that if not for the Wii, dance and motion based sports games genres would not exist.
Based on that belief, I find it hard to see how an optional, late to the game accessory with no confirmed equivalent elsewhere is going to attract enough talent to make the games to make the device a success. Even if Sony finds a way to sell this at a profit at a sub-$100 price.
There are rumours Microsoft is working on one of their own. If that happens... it increases the odds of success as there would be the ability to make games for two platforms. But I think the fact that there is no console where such a headset is either the primary input or a mandatory accessory stands to bury this one. Maybe if the PS5 ditches dual shock controllers, bundle the headset and Move the way MS bundles Kinect, then there may be a chance. But that too would be a huge gamble.
