Xbox Music Desktop app randomly starts working properly...
Well, this is a weird turn of events. For the past... I don't know... 6 months or more I've been having sporadic problems with the Xbox Music app. It would crash over time, only stream music out of one speaker, or stream out of no speakers. The audio stream issues were the weirdest, since skipping back and forth in my playlist would fix it. And then last week, any music I had recently downloaded seemed to cause the app to basically freeze up and become non-responsive. And then, one I attributed to my 1000+ song playlist, was a sometimes very noticeable delay when switching tracks.
Aside from the new issue last week, I had written this off as being a driver problem and was dealing with it. The app would only crash after a few hours of use, so not a big deal. The sound issues happened more often, but were easily resolved. In fact, I didn't even realize how much this was bothering me until today, now that they aren't there any more. The app slowing down issues from last week were the worst. They happened frequently, and the app would ignore commands for minutes at a time.
And then today, I turned on my music and every single one of those issues is gone. The music app has been playing throughout my work day. It hasn't crashed once, the sound hasn't cut out either from on headphone speaker or the other, the app freezing has stopped and the performance has also improved.
I have to suspect it is because Windows 8.1 installed an app update, or fixes server side. I checked my Windows update history and there were no Windows patches installed in the timeframe. I definitely haven't changed drivers. And the computer has been rebooted to no avail in the past as well. I don't have an app update history though and I wasn't paying close attention to the version before.
All I can say is, while perhaps not immediately noticeable (partly because the issues weren't immediately noticeable)... the changes are far from subtle. And for the better. So, if you were having issues with the Xbox Music App on your desktop/laptop/tablet, now might be a good day to go back and see if the issues still plague you as well.
If it breaks down again tomorrow, I'll have some rage. Now that things are seamless again, I don't think I could go back.
