Bing vs. Google
This will be short and sweet. But more than just one line.
I've been trying to switch from Google to Bing. And, in general, I feel they are both on par. The experiences are very similar, and the quality of the results are "on par" with each other. Which is more to say that both provide drastically varying quality results depending on the search used. I actually had the same problem with Yahoo! Often times I would try a search in Google and scroll through the first page or two and find nothing, then switch to Yahoo! and find excellent results in the first 3 links. But the next search I would try in Yahoo! would be rubbish and Google's would be good.
The same experience plagues me with Bing. Some times I get exactly what I want, and it is better than Google. And other times it isn't.
But, results are just a marginal part of the problem. Ever since my Google/Yahoo! experience I've just accepted that every once in a while I will switch to another search engine when the current one fails me.
For me, the biggest problem is how I tend to use search engines. I rarely just look up a random topic any more. I'm generally skimming for news on a specific topic. And likely a topic I've already looked up in the past. And this leads me to a feature Google has and Bing doesn't (well not exactly) which is a real pain in my butt. With Google, I can filter out results older than a certain period of time. I typically get links from the last 24hours or the last week. Either because I checked up the topic last week, yesterday, or I because I only want new and relevant information.
Bing technically does have this. But you cannot turn it on at will. At least not without hijacking the search url. Basically, some searches depending on things like number of results and number of search terms will offer it. But that isn't what I want. It isn't there to be turned on at will when I want it. And not all of my searches result in the option even being made available.
Grrr... so in terms of general search results. I give them both passing grades. But for my needs, Google search still wins :(.
