The Google Agenda

[update]
WOW! Just wow. And now google kills Microsoft's access to more Google functionality. If there was any doubt about the stance I took below on what Google's previous statements meant... there is absolutely no ignoring the facts now. Not only is Google basically killing all Windows based dev going forward, this latest move actually takes away support for Google services on Microsoft based platforms. They are now actively trying to force users from Microsoft and to Google.

To anyone who thinks Google is good and Microsoft is evil... Microsoft not only wants you to be able to use all of their services on other platforms, but they have historically, and continue to want you to be able to use your other services on their platform.

This is evil. But to me this is not new from Google. They stole Java and tried to claim they were exempt from those laws. They attempt to use SEP patents to enforce injunctions to try getting ludicrous sized license fees. They are currently arguing for AND against the exact same practices in two CONCURRENT court cases. And now, they are trying to screw over every Android user who also happens to be a Windows users which is probably the bulk of their user base. I'll repeat, the Google of today is not the friendly, open, innovative Google of yesteryear. Google has become one of the most evil business entities I've ever witnessed.

Well, more silly news. Earlier this week Google announced that it will not develop for Windows Phone 8 or Windows 8 because they are simply too small.

The problem with that statement is the inclusion of Windows 8.

Windows 8 already has a larger users base Google's personal computing devices. While it likely hasn't surpassed Mac or Windows 7 user #'s... it will. It isn't really a matter of if, but a simple matter of when. Google knows this... they almost definitely are refusing to invest in Windows for other reasons.

Also odd (well not odd, but if you take the comment at face value it is) is that, Google chose to make this announcement AFTER the Windows Phone platform has shown signs of life and momentum.

I doubt the timing of this statement is coincidental. I suspect Google is planning on more heavily investing in the OS sphere. These statements serve a dual purpose, one side of it is to insult their competition and hopefully foster a negative image of them, which is a slimy underhanded tactic... remember, while they may have some clout to say this sort of thing in the mobile space where Android is top dog in term of market share, when you consider where Google stands on the personal computer front, they are actually further behind Microsoft than Microsoft is behind Google in the phone sector. And yet they continue to develop for their own platform despite abysmal numbers there.

The second reason for this sort of public announcement is to try to deter people from using Microsoft's products. Many people are at least partially invested in the Google ecosystem thanks to their success in the mobile market, and Google has slowly but sure offered inferior knock offs to most of Microsoft's other offerings. But many people now use them out of convenience, we spend more times on our cell phones than our laptops. By slowly pulling out of the Microsoft camp, Google likely hopes that users will be forced to choose between a future Google based computer or switching to a Microsoft phone. By pulling their software out of both of Microsoft's platforms, they are hoping to lure you to whatever they offer in the future.

Combine this with Google's recent move to stop offering many of their Google Apps for free and I think a clear picture starts to emerge. Google sees hard times ahead selling your private information to marketers and sees the value of ad revenue declining. Your once champion of all things open source and free is about to start making more of a direct grab for what's in your wallet.

Beware your dependence on ecosystems.
