WP8 Dev done for now
Well, as I had posted recently, my new HTC 8X died. 5 days into owning it.
Anyway, when I went to the Microsoft store, they basically told me that they weren't actually allowed to sell it to me in the first place. Something about the carrier's not being happy about them being sold outright. But at least I got a refund. Went shopping around, and after that I couldn't find anywhere else that would sell me one outright.
I hate to sound bitter. But this is remarkably stupid. Firstly... one of the 3 big carriers in Canada won't have access to ANY WP8 devices until possibly as late as January 2013 as they were only carrying the Samsung ATIV S and it appears to have been delayed. Virtually none of the smaller carriers even show signs of so much as planning on picking up the platform, and while individually they may not be big if you combine all of Koodo, Wind, Fido, Mobility, Virgin Mobile and whoever else I'm missing and I'm sure that added to Telus and you'll probably wind up with a percentage approaching half of the Canadian population. F***ing stupid. How can you launch a product nationally while making it difficult if not impossible for half of said nation to acquire. Worse, I don't know who to blame. Though I think the carriers and Microsoft likely both deserve some of the blame.
Anyway, the reason for the app was to fill a void created on my own device that there was no readily discoverable (if one existed) app that did what I was planning in a fashion that took advantage of the WP8 platform. Without a device to fill that need, the wind has been taken out of my sails. And by the time I'm able to get a phone now I have no doubt the gap will be filled. Task based apps are fairly standard fare for people getting into a platform for the first time.
Might try Rogers again early next month. Apparently they have no beef with selling phones outright, even to people not on Roger's. BUT they keep it locked down for the first month or so to Roger's customers only. The Bell rep gave no indication that Bell would ever sell me a phone outright... but no worries there, they only have the 8X and Rogers has that too.
If/when I get another WP8 device I'll go looking. If the app store is still missing an app to match my needs I may pick back up where I left off. I still hate the cluster-f*** eco-system that is Android. And I still feel that iOS is a now tired feeling OS. So unless I end up on BB10 for some odd reason I will eventually get another WP8 device.
