Crying over... Nothing?

I really get a kick out life some days. People are inventively stupid. Seems like an oxymoron but I'm at a loss for a better description.

The amusement of the week comes from the backlash over the announcements for Windows 8. In the demo it was mentioned that the new touch interface would be driven by HTML5 and java script, with no mention of Silverlight.

A day later the entire .net and Silverlight community basically exploded in rage and fear. Keep in mind this is the first demo for a software not even in beta not even definitively planned to be released next year yet. They haven't said Silverlight isn't there and while it is certainly true they didn't say it was there either, they also didn't a mention a whole myriad of other things about it that no one seems to be concerned about. They also didn't promise it wouldn't rape and pillage the country side... Is that the sound of Silverlight devs reading this running to buy supplies and fortify their houses?

Read the above link for an example of the hilarity.

I don't claim to know what Windows 8 will be in the end. But I'm certainly not concerned about things that haven't been said. In fact Microsoft has stated that Silverlight isn't going anywhere any time soon rather recently, and all practicality and sanity point the exact other direction.

For instance, the demoed Windows 8 interface is a blatant reuse of the windows phone UI. Which is purely Silverlight. Silverlight and .Net have huge developer base who write applications. Microsoft likes to promote a single suite of tools and languages for developers. All of these things say they would be stupid to abandon Silverlight.

HTML5 on the other hand is primarily a design language and java script is a stop gap between HTML and real application development languages. HTML developers are good at certain things and I'm sure double as decent application developers, but that has never been (as a generalization) their bread and butter.

So where does this leave us? If Microsoft dropped Silverlight in favor of HTML they would gain a lot of designers and lose the people that write apps. Which do you think they care about more? Moving to a mobile do focused platform they need real applications, not HTML and JavaScript. Anyone read the features in the upcoming Silverlight 5? One feature sounds an awful lot like allowing Silverlight to load a proper browser inside a Silverlight control. Odd that this would be a perfect fusion between HTML and what is available on windows phone?

Anyway, they have apps and developers for a mobile platform. They are moving towards a mobile platform. The next version of their current mobile platforms framework is already known to natively support the feared HTML and java script. If I were to say what all signs point to at present it would be that Silverlight will be included but the extent of the integration is not yet fully known. Sounds a lot more sane than the other conclusions, especially given how far from release we are and how little information has been made available.
